Gems of Light: Luminarias with Cheri Epstein

Enjoy the fun of creating with a favorite childhood material, tissue paper, by transforming it into stunning luminarias glowing with transparency and light.

The technique of layering vibrant colors and patterns is relaxing, opening the way for playful experimentation. Metallic foils, beads, ribbons, and ephemera add charm to your finished pieces. The “aha” moment arrives when all the luminarias come alive with strings of LED mini-lights. Just the thing to brighten a winter’s day!

Altered Books Extravaganza

Altered Books Extravaganza

An Altered Book is a piece of mixed media artwork featuring an old book that has had new life breathed into it. You might choose a specific book because of its title or theme, or you can create something entirely new.

Using a hard-cover book of whatever size you choose (I recommend no more than about 300 pages), you will cut, tear, glue, collage, stamp, fold and adorn the pages according to a few instructions from me, plus your imagination.

We’ll add flaps and pockets, doorways that open, secret compartments, and much more.

You can use your Altered Book as an art journal or as a piece of art on its own.

Location is 2KatStudios in Prescott. Address, directions, and recommendations for overnight accommodations sent upon registration.

Enjoy the Process!

“Jeweled Mirrors” with Debra Mager, Cinderella Mosaics

Come join guest artist Debra Mager and learn a magical, beautiful mosaic technique, developed by the late, legendary mosaicist, Laurel Skye. Debra was taught by Laurel several years ago and now shares this magical technique with others, with Laurel’s blessings. You will create mirrors that resemble tapestry, using materials such as stained glass, beads, jewelry, trinkets, and other treasures. Once you learn this method, you can use it to cover other things, too, like boxes or vases, etc. The supplies and materials which are provided are A 10×10 mirror Mosaic tools Mastic Pigment Stained glass Filler beads Items you may want to bring: Costume jewelry pieces Small strung beads Mirror pieces Rhinestones Shells Stones Buttons Charms Found objects Various treasures.

Since no grouting is involved (yay!), you can embed just about anything. Some mosaic experience is a plus but not required. We will meet from 10 am – 4 pm both days, and you will take home your original jeweled mosaic mirror at the end of the day Sunday. The cost of this one-of-a-kind experience is $275.00, which includes supplies, materials, and the kit fee. A list of local places to stay will be sent upon registration. The nearest airport is Phoenix, which is a 2-hour drive to Prescott. AZ Shuttle runs every half hour and drops passengers off at a variety of locations, including their head office and several hotels. Or you can rent a car and enjoy the drive, and maybe visit Sedona, Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, and more local attractions while you’re here. If you wish to fly directly into Prescott, you can do that from Los Angeles or Denver via United Express. My studio is about 14 minutes from the airport here. Your Instructor, Debra Mager is a self-taught mosaic artist from Alpharetta, Georgia. Her unceasing desire to create art came late in life, and she developed her craft by learning from the best mosaic teachers in the country, reading many books on the subject, and by practice. Her goal is to share the joy of creating with those who view her work. And by teaching, she hopes to help others express their creative talent so that they too may enjoy the sheer pleasure of making art.

She considers her art, in the words of the author, Elizabeth Gilbert, “souvenirs” of her artistic journey. Visit her website at

“Beaded Bling-y” Mixed Media Mosaics

This workshop will provide you with cool new ways of creating gorgeous, one-of-a-kind mosaics. You will learn techniques for attaching beads, tiles, mirror, glass, gems, costume jewelry, charms, and basically anything else to another surface, be it a bottle, a flat shape, a tray, or whatever you might want to use.

We will begin with “instruction” time, with descriptions and demonstrations of the various tools we use in mosaics, as well as adhesives, design, organization of materials, and safety practices. After a demonstration of this process and some discussion, you will be encouraged to dive in and start creating. You are welcome to take your piece outside if you wish to add in some natural elements.

Students of all levels welcome! If you’ve done mosaics before, this will be new for you too. If you’ve never done mosaics, this will be really fun for you!

Supply List:

All materials and supplies WILL be provided for you, and there will be a kit fee per student of $35.00. Feel free to bring along any special items to add to your piece. Students can let me know their color palette preferences so I will bring the right colors of beads and glass! “Outside the Box” With Laurie Mika

In this two-day class, students will create a beautiful and unique three-dimensional box. Each side of the box provides an opportunity to explore a variety of mixed media and polymer clay techniques.

We will cover stamping into clay, painting on the raw clay surface, embedding a variety of objects into clay, easy transfers, gold leaf and collage on clay.

There are so many surfaces just waiting to be transformed including the box top and the legs. In addition to polymer clay techniques, we will also cover mixed media techniques like using stencils and rubber-stamping on the wood surfaces.

Students will leave class with an incredible art piece that is both beautiful and functional and ready to hold a special treasure.
